Freedom Day

Join us as we honor Freedom Day, known as Juneteenth and Emancipation Day, to commemorate the 1865 emancipation of enslaved African Americans.
On Saturday, June 19, 2021, there is no charge for Shirley’s grounds and out-buildings. Explore our Slavery Exhibit located in the Kitchen Building, and make sure to view “A Peculiar Institution”, our newest addition to the Slavery Exhibit. Our Enslavement Walking Tour will be held at 12 pm and 2 pm at no charge. A guided tour of the first floor of the home is available for an extra fee of $10 per adult and $5 per youth. Please visit the Gift Shop upon arrival to sign up for a guided tour.

Enslavement Walking Tour:
Learn about the history of slavery at Shirley Plantation and the lives of the enslaved who lived and worked here. From the earliest records of Africans in Virginia, their indentured predecessors, to the many facets of and labor roles they played, where and how they lived, and what happened to them. This rain or shine guided tour is complimentary with admission and will take place indoors in the event of inclement weather.
