Enslavement Walking Tours

Enslavement Walking Tours will be offered at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 29th, 2021. Learn about the history of slavery at Shirley Plantation and the lives of the enslaved who lived and worked here. From the earliest records of Africans in Virginia, their indentured predecessors, to the many facets of and labor roles they played, where and how they lived, and what happened to them.

This is an outside walking tour on the grounds of Shirley. Tour lasts approximately 45 minutes. Weather-appropriate clothing and shoes are recommended. Tour is offered at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM on select dates. Tours will be canceled in inclement weather or in case of a heat advisory.

Booking online in advance is recommended. Due to COVID-19 and in accordance with Virginia’s Phase 3 requirements, capacity is limited and groups must maintain social distancing (minimum 6 ft) and wear masks at all times social distancing is not possible. Masks are required inside all public buildings on the property. We request that guests with children please adhere to social distancing requirements.
